The CAO Mortal Coil Toro is one of the most distinctive releases in CAO’s Arcana series, built around a rare and ancient Dominican fermentation method known as andullo tobacco. This traditional process involves tightly coiling cured tobacco into palm leaf pods called yaguas, allowing it to ferment slowly over an extended period. The result is a dense, concentrated tobacco with deep, naturally sweet and earthy characteristics that set Mortal Coil apart from almost anything else in the CAO portfolio.
Presented in a 6 1/8 x 50 Toro vitola, the cigar uses a dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper over a Connecticut Shade binder, with fillers from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras. This combination creates a bold yet refined structure, balancing the intensity of the andullo tobacco with the richness and sweetness of the wrapper and the complexity of mixed Central American fillers.
From the first light, the Mortal Coil Toro delivers an immediately recognisable profile that feels both rustic and layered. Expect deep notes of earth, dark chocolate, black cherry, cocoa and roasted nuts, underpinned by a subtle natural sweetness that reflects the andullo fermentation style. There is often a distinctive savoury edge as well, something between molasses and dried fruit, which gives the cigar a unique identity compared to more conventional CAO blends.
As the cigar develops, the Toro format allows the blend to evolve gradually. The first third tends to lean into earth, pepper and cocoa richness, while the middle section introduces more rounded sweetness and a thicker, creamier smoke texture. Hints of leather, espresso and dark fruit begin to emerge, creating a layered and evolving profile rather than a linear progression. By the final third, the cigar typically settles into a deeper, more concentrated mix of roasted coffee, wood, spice and lingering sweetness.
